Abortion is one of the most debated moral and ethical issues in society today. For Christians, the Bible provides foundational principles that shape our understanding of human life, its value, and how we should approach the topic of abortion. While the Bible does not mention abortion explicitly, it speaks clearly about the sanctity of life and the responsibility to protect the innocent.


1. Human Life Begins in the Womb


Scripture consistently affirms that life begins in the womb and that God is intimately involved in forming each person before birth. Psalm 139:13-16 declares:


“For You formed my inward parts; You knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are Your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from You, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in Your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.”


This passage reveals that God’s knowledge and care for a person begin before birth, affirming the intrinsic value of unborn life.


2. God Has a Purpose for Every Life


The Bible teaches that every human being is created with a purpose, even before birth. Jeremiah 1:5 says:


“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”


Similarly, the apostle Paul speaks of God setting him apart from his mother’s womb (Galatians 1:15). These verses indicate that unborn children are not accidents but are known and purposed by God.


3. The Bible Condemns the Taking of Innocent Life


One of the strongest biblical principles related to abortion is the command to protect innocent life. Exodus 20:13 states:


“You shall not murder.”


The shedding of innocent blood is repeatedly condemned in Scripture (Proverbs 6:16-17; Deuteronomy 27:25). Since the Bible affirms the humanity of the unborn, ending that life is viewed as taking innocent blood.


4. Children Are a Blessing from the Lord


Rather than being seen as burdens, children are considered a blessing and a gift from God. Psalm 127:3-5 says:


“Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them!”


This passage emphasizes the value of children and the joy they bring to families.


5. God’s Grace Is Available for Those Who Have Had Abortions


For those who have had an abortion, the Bible offers hope, forgiveness, and restoration through Jesus Christ. 1 John 1:9 states:


“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”


No sin is beyond God’s grace, and He offers healing to those who seek Him. Many women and men who have been affected by abortion have found peace and redemption through Christ.


Conclusion


Based on biblical principles, Christians believe that life begins in the womb, that every person is created with purpose, and that taking innocent life is against God’s design. While the Bible calls believers to uphold the sanctity of life, it also offers grace and forgiveness to those who have experienced abortion. As followers of Christ, we are called to support and care for both unborn children and their mothers with compassion, truth, and love.
